MURRAYFIELD DREAM OVER FOR ROSS
Ross Sutherland 5 Duns 13
Rugby fever hit Invergordon last weekend as Ross Sutherland entertained a strong Borders side who had to call upon all their higher league experience to eventually win this hard fought encounter by only two penalties and a margin of 13 points to 5.
Nearly 200 people turned out to watch the biggest game in Ross Sutherland’s season so far and were not disappointed. The game started at an electric pace and Ross quickly had Duns on the back foot and gained an early penalty that was narrowly missed by Ross’s scum half Stuart Mack.
Duns were surprised by the commitment and skill of the home side and with an enthusiastic crowd getting behind Ross, it was against the run of play when Duns converted a penalty to go 3 in front. This score seemed to spur on the home side and it wasn’t long before Ross’s pressure paid off as a Ross line out in the Dun’s 22 yard area was well won by big Alex Murray and with the forwards gaining quick momentum in the ruck and with clever handling through the backs, it was left to young winger Mike Gordon to flash past his opposite number and go over in the corner for Ross to get their noses in front by five points to three, as the conversion was missed.
Ross continued the pressure on Duns and were unlucky not to add to their points tally in this first half. An unfortunate serious injury to a Duns player interrupted the continuity of play and this benefitted the away side and the half finished with Ross still having the two point gap and the upper hand.
The second half started with Duns beginning to force the play and with Ross on the back foot, they went over under the posts, when James Thorburn broke the Ross line to force the try that was easily converted. With the score now at ten points to five for the away side, Ross had to gain the momentum that saw them take the lead in the first half. This experienced Duns side were able to break down Ross’s strong forward game and with frustration creeping into their play, it was unfortunate a penalty was conceded just inside the Ross half that was converted by Dun’s full back Dale Robertson to put them further in front by thirteen points to five.
The crowd tried to lift the home side and it was not for lack of effort or commitment that saw the last 20 minutes played in the Dun’s half, but Ross were unable to convert their pressure into points and the game ended with Ross unable to break down Duns strong defensive line up.
As the final whistle blew the relief and joy shown by the travelling Dun’s players was evident to confirm this quality side had been given a real fright by an extremely hard working and improving Ross side.
John Scott the Ross Coach who was recently awarded the honour of being named the Highlands and Islands Coach of the Year, was quick to praise his side and said, “Duns got the fright of their lives today and it was evident that they play regularly within a higher standard of league than us and it allowed them to have the experience and ability to close out this game. My players were superb over the 80 minutes and will learn from this game. I was delighted with the crowd that turned up to support us on the day and it would be fantastic to see this being repeated on a more regular basis. We have all worked very hard this year within the club to improve the standard of our play and this showed today. However, we have a massive game coming up against Moray in the play off for league promotion and what we have learned from today is how badly we need this and how badly we want it.”

Ross-Sutherland vs. Stornaway RFC (Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North-West)
Ross-Sutherland ended this season’s league campaign with a thumping 55-5 victory over Stornaway. With a difficult April ahead of them, which sees them compete in a promotion play off and cup quarterfinal, this was exactly the kind of start that they needed to the month. Leaving coach John Scott with some selection headaches as competition for positions heats up.
The Stags began the game in electric fashion dominating possession and holding good field position. The home fans did not have a long wait before the scoring was opened, with veteran full-back Jim Rodgers rolling back the years to weave his way over the try-line, which was promptly converted by Stuart Mack to put Ross into a 7-0 lead. Mack was soon in action again slotting home a penalty to put Ross 10-0 up after Stornaway were penalised in there own 22 yard line.
A Stornaway breakaway try saw them come back into contention at 10-5. However this was short-lived, with Ross’s superior work-rate exploiting more territory for Gerry Rosie to score from a quick-tap penalty again converted by Mack to extend Ross’s lead to 17-5.
Rauridh Waugh then made a terrific break from inside his own half, giving an inside switch to fellow forward John Gordon who galloped through the Stornaway defence for his first try of the afternoon. Again converted by Mack to put Ross 24-5 up and in a comfortable postion at the half time interval.
Ross-Sutherland began the second-half deep inside the Stornaway half and after a couple of failed attempts, Ross eventually exploited the over-lap to finish with a try scored by Jake Eaglesham.
Ross-Sutherland’s backs were in fine form, with a notable display by young Ross centre Ally Clunes, who showed good hands to set up Andrew Bridgeford for a try in the corner and increase Ross’ lead to 34-5.
The pressure was beginning to tell for Stornaway and matters were not helped when there full-back was yellow-carded and sent to the sin bin after a late tackle. Ross-Sutherland seized the advantage with an explosive run by prop John Gordon, who broke through three tackles to score his second of the game. Mack got back to kicking form after two previous failed conversion attempts to convert the try and put the Stags 41-5 up.
Ross again retained possession and fan’s favourite Kenny Dalrimple got on the end of a rolling maul to score in the corner leaving a difficult kick for Stuart Mack. But the Dingwall man was up to the challenge showing great poise to slot the conversion from a difficult angle and put Ross further ahead with little time remaining.
There was just enough time for Ross’ backs to string together some excellent passes to put through flanker Alex Murray for a try, who capped a man-of-the-match performance in style with a well-taken try. Stuart Mack again converted for the home side and finished the score at 55-5.

Ross-Sutherland is away to Aberdeen Wanderers next Saturday 11th April in a promotion play-off. They then have a massive home Scottish Hydro Electric National Plate quarter-final clash with Duns RFC, which promises to be an enthralling encounter on Saturday 18th of April. If Ross-Sutherland were to win they would be within one game of a trip to Murrayfield. In light of this, Ross-Sutherland are having a club open day, which will start at 12 pm, and would like to welcome anybody wishing to come along and enjoy the occasion.

Ross-Sutherland Stags vs. RAF Lossiemouth. (Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North-West)
Ross-Sutherland Stags continued their success in the league this year with a difficult victory over RAF Lossiemouth. A bruising encounter between the two clubs eventually finished 17-13.
The first ten minutes saw Ross-Sutherland enjoy some good possession, spending the majority deep inside Lossiemouth’s half. However they failed to build on it, missing a penalty and squandering some good chances. The game then started to turn on the home side as Lossiemouth began to piece together some good back moves. The visitor’s eventually took the advantage with a penalty mid-way through the first half to go 3-0 up. The Ross forwards reacted with some strong running and were unlucky not to go into half-time with the lead, when what looked like a certain try was judged to be held-up.
Ross began the second half in good fashion, with the forwards linking up well to go over for a try scored by Jake Pliscine. Ross-Sutherland then enjoyed the majority of possession with the backs and forwards creating some holes in the Lossie defence. This was soon followed with a try from young substitute Mike Gordon to extend Ross-Sutherland’s lead to 10-3. But RAF Lossiemouth were far from finished and with fifteen minutes to go went over for their first try of the afternoon keeping them within two points at 10-8.
Ross-Sutherland then hit back and was unfortunate not to score from a Craig Smith effort, again being held-up. Pete Mackenzie thought he had extended the home sides advantage after squeezing in under the posts, however the referee judged the ball to have been knocked on. Eventually Ross-Sutherland did manage to cross the line with winger Gareth Braddich getting the try. Stuart Mack kicked the conversation to put Ross-Sutherland into a 17-8 lead. With minutes remaining, RAF Lossiemouth got there second of the afternoon going over in the corner, they failed to convert the try and the match was over, 17-13 to Ross-Sutherland.
